Training and Development-Week 22 & 23

Imagine you are the HR Manager for a retail chain with a training programme for new graduate entrants. It is anticipated that these graduates will be store managers at the end of their 2 year training programme.

You have been asked to plan and design a one week induction programme for the graduates.

A one week induction programme for graduates in a retail chain...

(I would base the introduction on the premises of the actual shop and also away in a private area of the store itself for any tests/examinations or handbook work that would need to be done.)

DAY 1- An introduction to the company /an introduction of what to expect in the next 2 years of the training programme/ what the company is looking for

DAY 2- Overall security measures, e.g. medical emergency's, fires etc/ What to expect from customers/ what is expected of the graduate and performance at work/ work on basic skills used in the company e.g till work following what others are doing and getting an eye for the company.

DAY 3- An in depth look on what is involved in a store managers role, and what type of jobs are involved/ helping out/ learning key new skills from videos and hand books.

DAY 4- Have a look at handed it hand books to see how candidates did/ Work on what the graduate lacks outlining any difficulties or worries they may be have/Carry on shop work and learning key basic skills working up to working alone and ask for help when needed.

DAY 5- Keep a close look on new graduates and evaluate their performance/ Work again on new skills/ proceed with store management training.

To evaluate the induction training and its effectiveness, I would keep referring back to the graduates hand books and see where their weak and strong points lie, moreover work upon any weaknesses, misunderstanding, issues or worried they may have. Furthermore as a result in seeing if the induction has been affected the individuals' work performance can be judged.

A good blog, Chennel, remember that a week is a long time and there might have to be some team building activities as well as being in the 'classroom'. Imagine yourself on this programme. Make the evaluation more relevant, refer to the lecture notes, which of course would have been easy if you had been in the lecture!
