Personality-Week 7

Individuals differ from personality traits they gain from natural and nurture approaches. The differences lie between nature being influences you gain from a natural 'innate state' once your born, and nurture is more of an affect the environment has on you as you gain a knowledge of the world that you develop of which has an affect on you personality.

Personality can be divided into two main types, called nomothetic and idiographic.

The nomothetic approach to personality looks at specific traits in personality as a whole collection of characteristics. These characteristics are obvious as they can later be observed by tests. This perspective helps many managers when they are selecting the few for training and development of hiring staff. Environmental and social influences are left minimal when people gain a nomothetic approach to personality and have a consistant personality that is inherited and has a resistance to change,

A Nomothetic approach to personality closely involve themselves to studies that are scientific. They gain an insight of how the individual lives and perceives themselves as a whole. The idiographic approach involves the main idea to find someones uniqueness and the development they pursue. They regard people as individuals who respond to the environment around them and carry out traits evolved through experience from around them.

As the dominant influence I find nurture as a more influential perspective to an individuals personality as you are what, and how the environment makes you and the influences you undertake from a young age. (Management and Organisational behaviour, Laurie J Mullins pg 125.)

Here is a summary of my findings from the website (http://www.initforlife.com/) The tests indicate that my mind frame's leading point is my sensitivity to others, subjects and surroundings, control, logic and insight are others that follow. According to the test mind frames that are not in my comfort zone evolve around sociability, proactivity, order and charisma.

After taking the test on the site (www.haleonline.com) I found according to the results that I am the type of person who digs in and goes right at getting the job done, and I use logic and analysis as guiding principles in my life. Apparently the results show I am a team leader and put work before pleasure, fun time is often seen as a reward from an accomplishment. In relationships Love means stability and steadfastness, and I expect security and loyalty in relationships.

Comparing the two test I find that I do not entirely agree with both of them a 100% however I find my self as an individual who knows when to be serious and get things done in an orderly manner and when to have fun and socialise. I prefer having a group of people around me that I feel comfortable with and I find I can be overly sensitive in certain situations as stated in my first results from the first test I took. My sensitivity may be quickly taken over by my actions as a result. Overall I think the tests are a good outline of my personality, however I feel my full personality involves a quite balanced feel.

I would not be entirely happy for such tests to be used as a selection tool, as they can not be relied on to be accurate 100% of the time. They are useful in the sense that they provide a rough outline of ones personality however I do not fully agree with the results given, so therefore I would not like to be assessed in this sort of way.

In conclusion to personality and the research I have undertaken I find that personality is a result of change and influence you have as a child and pursue these feelings and characteristics as you grow older to learn new things in general. Personality is how someone relates to changes and how as a result you are perceived by others.
