Improving Staff Performance-Week 3
The difference between content and process theories, lies between intrinsic and extrinsic needs. Content theories involve specific aspects that make an individual happy at work intrinsically, satisfying their individual needs and their strengths by setting goals. Where as process theories is more of an extrinsic need for example, what physically makes an individual happy i.e. the environment and behaviour in a business. (Management and organisational behaviour, pg 256-257)
Here are two organisations, and how they motivate their employees.
NHS nurses:
- work in an environment that's interesting, rewarding and challenging.
- largest group of staff in the NHS.
- Nurses work in every sort of health setting from accident and emergency, therefore nurses have a wide range of the sort of job they want to pursue.
- people of all ages and backgrounds are welcome.
- Learn as an apprentiship, nurses begin their career by working their way up from support roles, which require no set qualifications.
- flexible working hours can be arranged.
- THe NHS provides excellent benefits and a wealth of opportunities.
- Nurses are appreciated as those who enhance people's lives during their times of need.

One of the organisations I have chosen to look at is the British Airways pilot, the career offers alot of satisfying bonuses and extras such as reduced airline travel, and first class holiday entitlements in addition to pursuing this type of job role it shows that the company is very rewarding, relating this to Alderfer's ERG theory we can see that the existence needs are satisfied as the company offers staff restaurants, bonuses and generous holiday entitlement. The relatedness needs are satisfied as a pilot is clearly apart of a group, moreover you are given the chance to grow as your career goes on with ranging salaries on offer.
In conclusion I can see that motivation is overall what satisfies an individuals personal needs and wants from a business as everyone is different, therfore everyones intrinsic and extrinsic needs and wants are different relating to content and process theory. Many companies offer a vast range of benefits from joining them, and offer great career aspects, however there are still disadvantages present for example becoming a BA pilot is not a 9-5 wokring hours job role moreover several work commitments may interfier with home and social life.
